Recently I chanced upon a cord from our receipt printer and it got me smiling.
There was a piece of paper attached to the end of the cord with a handwritten number label on it. As flimsy as that paper was, it was once a critical piece of paper.
The first time we moved office, I sat down with my POS System at our new locale and had a mini panic attack. Where did this wire plug into, what of this other one…? Honestly there’s nothing more frustrating than unpacking and being faced with a bunch of tangled unruly wires, and looking at the mess of wires wondering where they plug into.
Over time, I came up with a moving strategy for electronics that would give me as little downtime as possible in any new locale. Not only does this help with moving office/home, but also helps with home electronics/devices anytime we need to remove them for remodeling / renovation purposes.
Very simple actually, the process goes like this👇. You can use Method 1, Method 2, or both. I usually use a combination of the two.
- Method 1: Label each cord end with a unique number and paste the same number on its corresponding jack point where it plugs into in the other device(s). When you need to re-plug your devices, it’s as easy as 1,2,3 or a,b,c …depending on the label numbering you used.
- Method 2: Take a photograph of how your electronics are connected so you can remember how and where all the wires go. And whip up the photo when you need to reconnect.
In both methods, make sure to wrap each individual cord neatly using a rubber band to keep cords separate & tangle-free. Also, instead of putting all cords into one box, pack individual cords in the same box as their corresponding device(s).
Anyway, now I don’t need the number labels for the POS System as I know where everything goes now, but I still use this method for all other devices, like TVs, decoders, et al.
And it’s helped a ton.
