During my university years, I had an epiphany.
I had a Bible that had Jesus’ words in red and had cross-references that showed where the same phrase appeared elsewhere in the Bible.
One day, while mindlessly casting my eyes between the bible passage text and the references, I discovered something.
The more I looked, the more I realized that a huge part of Jesus’ spoken words can be found in the Old Testament. As in, he embodied the Old Testament so much so that he spoke it so effortlessly, answering and addressing life’s moments with the Word. (For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks…). Deep scholars who heard him in the Temple when he was Twelve “were astonished at his understanding and answers”, particularly for one so young.
As I noticed this, I started intentionally cross-checking just his words against the references. And the more I cross-checked, the more I realized he is indeed the Word embodied. That had to be it. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
Over the years I have also found that the most powerful, most potent, and most answered prayers I’ve prayed are those where I pray in Bible verses, that is, with the Word. When I pondered on this, I realized that it must be because saying the verses out loud is like having Jesus present in the room with you. He is the Word and the Word is him. “For the word of God is ALIVE and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow.”
Yes, the Word of God is indeed the Sword of the Spirit, not returning unto God void, but accomplishing that which He pleases, and achieving the purpose for which He sent it.
